Seat Types - Reference

To help identify what type of seat is on your bike.......A long list of pics here.....

Seat Covers and Styles...........

............Z-1 style seat......

The 1973 thru 1975 Z-1 models used seats that had a distinct cover pattern...........

Their basic shape is the same as the flat "A" model seats used on the 1976 KZ900A models, and 1977 and 1978 KZ1000A models......

............ 1976- 1977 KZ900A / 1977 Kz1000A seats .......

1976 & 1977 KZ900A models, as well as the 1977 KZ1000A models, used a flat seat with this cover pattern......

..................
............ 1978 KZ1000A seat ..........

The 1978 KZ1000A models used a flat seat with this cover pattern........

... 1976 KZ900B / 1977 thru 1980 KZ1000B (LTD) seat ...

The 900 & 1000 LTD models from 1976 thru 1980 used this seat.......Only the cover and foam differ from the flat "A" seats used on the KZ900A and 1977-1978 KZ1000A models....

These seats will fit directly on a KZ900, or 1977-78 KZ1000A model .......

.. 1978 KZ1000D1 / Z1-R seat .........
........... 1980 KZ1000D3 / Z1-R seat .........

Same pan as the 1978, just a slightly different pattern on the cover.....

 ........ 1979 & 1980 KZ1000A3/A4 (MK II) seat .......

Along with changes in the shape of the fuel tank and tail section on the 79 & 80 KZ1000A's,  a new style of seat was used.....

........... 1980 KZ1000G / Z-1 Classic seat .........

The Z-1 Classics did not have a tail section, and use a longer seat than the "A" or "B" models....

Seat Pans & Lock Brackets...........

.........Z-1 style seat pan and lock bracket......

The 1973 thru 1975 Z-1 models used a seat lock latch shaped like a prong on the seat bottom......This arrangement will only lock into the lock mechanism on the Z-1 models......It is difficult to modify these seats to work on the later models......

All the 1973 thru 1980 900 & 1000 models that use a hinged seat have the hinges identically spaced........Therefore, the seat lock aside, all these seats will mount interchangeably on the different year/model frames.....

......"A" style & "B"  style seat pan & lock bracket.......

The 1976 thru 1978 KZ900 & KZ1000A models, as well as the 1976 thru 1980 900B & 1000B (LTD) models used a seat lock latch shaped like a hoop........This arrangement will only lock into the lock mechanism on these models......

The lock latch on these seats CAN be modified to work on the lock mechanism of a 1973 thru 1975 Z-1 900 model......

............Z1-R style seat pan.......

The 1978 and 1980 KZ1000D (Z1-R) models use a seat with a lock latch in the rear.....They also stowed the kickstart arm under the seat......
Although the 78 and 80 models have seats with different covers, they mount interchangeably, and use the same pan.....

............ 1980 KZ1000G /  Z-1 Classic style seat pan.......

The 1980 fuel-injected Z-1 Classic used a unique seat that housed the fuel injection control unit.....It is longer than the "A" and "B" seats, as the 1000G  models did not use a tail section...
